Awards and Classics of Children's Literature
3 credits
Instructor: Laura Apol
In this course, we focused on the elements of award winning literature for children and how to effectively use them within a classroom setting. The best part of this course for me was being able to read and compare classic award winning novels with their movie version counterparts. The most memorable book to movie comparison was with the beloved novel, Little Women. I also enjoyed taking a classic story and looking at several versions of the story that are available for purchase. I found it interesting the various ways in which an author and illustrator can transform the story with pictures and even with slight changes in the wording of a classic story.

Concepts of Educational Inquiry
3 credits
Instructor: Steven Weiland
This required course was an introductory class that focused on the basic concepts of educational inquiry and pedagogy. Through my readings from various educators, I was able to consider and evaluate my own personal and long held philosophies of education. This course also provided opportunities for me to examine various teacher belief systems and how education has evolved over time. Concepts of Educational Inquiry involved reading many articles and professional essays written by educators about the changes in education over the course of history. With this information, we then evaluated whether we could apply the educational theories into our own classrooms, if appropriate. The history of education and how attitudes have changed regarding education was also examined during this class. Studying the field of education's past has made me become a better teacher in the present.

Teaching Exceptional Children and Youth in the General Education Classroom
3 credits
Instructor: Susan Peters
In this course, I learned a lot about how as a general education teacher I can provide a better educational experience to children with special needs in my general education classroom. I was able to learn more about the complex federal implications of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and where a classroom teacher's responsibilities fit into the ADA when working with special needs students. More importantly, we were able to analyz how special education and diagnosis of children has changed and improved over the last several years. This course also provided a very personal perspective through a reflection paper focusing on how special education has affected a person I am close to. This course really opened my eyes to how I can meet the educational and social needs of special needs students.

Teaching School Subject Matter with Technology
3 credits
Instructor: Eric Byker
This course focused on the various forms of technology and how technology has a positive impact on learning in today's schools. We worked with different school subjects and developed a better understanding of how technology can be integrated into a traditional lesson plan. During this enjoyable course, I learned about several different forms of technology (iPads, online, interactive white boards) that were available to teachers. I explored how these technologies can help my students become more actively engaged in our traditional classroom subjects through the use of technology. The most meaningful part of this course for me was the final project. I was able to create and post a You Tube video on the city of Port Huron, Michigan where I teach. My students really enjoyed viewing the video and learning about their town's history. They were also fascinated to learn that Thomas Edison lived in Port Huron, Michigan, as a young boy.

Teaching K-12 Students Online
3 credits
Instructor: Leigh Wolf
During this course, I learned that in today's technologically advanced society, there are many online opportunities. These opportunities are available to help teachers support their students' individual learning goals through the use of technology in the classroom. Technology should be utilized in the classroom on a daily basis. This course proved that the typical teaching style (of teacher at the front of the class lecturing) was antiquated and that my students would benefit with the use of integrated technology into their daily lessons. To this day, I continue to use the online information from this course on a regular basis in my classroom teaching. I have discovered that consistent use of technology offers a direct alignment with what our students are challenged with in today’s technological world.

Accommodating Differences in Literacy Learners
3 credits
Instructor: Laura Disney
While taking this course, I learned about differentiation of literacy instruction techniques. More importantly, I developed teaching skills that have allowed me to directly apply differentiation in my reading and writing activities on a daily basis. I was able to immediately apply the theories in this course and I developed a new perspective on how I use materials, literacy lessons and effective teaching practices in my classroom. The course also focused on how I as a teacher can effectively differentiate learning materials to better meet the individual literacy needs of all students. This course also focused on the use of technology as a form of differentiation which supported the literacy portion of the school improvement plan where I teach.

Elementary Reading Assessment and Instruction
3 credits
Instructor: Laura Disney
This course focused on reading and the evaluation of various forms of elementary assessments. I learned how these assessments can help to drive reading instruction in my classroom. In this course, I was able to immediately apply the reading and literacy assessments in my classroom while I was taking the course. Several of the literacy assessments really helped me evaluate and track the reading abilities of my students. I enjoyed this class because it was helpful in my everyday teaching of reading. Also, the new instructional techniques we were presented with proved to be highly effective in a real world classroom setting.

Educating Students With Challenging Behavior
3 credits
Instructor: Evelyn Oka
During this course, I learned more about how to educate students who display more complex behavior problems in my kindergarten classroom. As a general education teacher, I found this course to be particularly helpful as I navigated a student with possible autism spectrum disorder during that school year. After deciding to perform my case study on this student for the course, I was able to come up with new behavior modification strategies that helped him learn to cope with frustrations in a more productive manner. This was one of the most valuable courses that I took during the course of my Masters Degree program because my class and my challenging student benefited from the training I received.

Developing Positive Attitudes Towards Learning
3 credits
Instructor: Evelyn Oka
In this course, I learned about the various approaches a teacher can take to modify lessons in order to make them more meaningful and productive for students who lack motivation to learn. Lack of motivation can be a problem even in the early elementary grades and a few of my students were displaying negative attitudes towards learning, even in kindergarten. I found that by using the teaching framework provided in this course, I was able to give my students a more personalized learning setting where they were able to make decisions about individual learning that suited their learning style. They were also able to set personal learning goals for themselves. This course showed me how to make my classroom a place where the teacher and students work as a team to collaborate and learn. This course showed me that this can be done within the confines of a traditional classroom setting.
